Antonio Conte has told Thursday’s press conference – as per Football London – that Tottenham midfielder Oliver Skipp is feeling “frustrated” as he remains on the sidelines through injury. He has just signed a new deal.
Skipp, 21, was in excellent form during Conte’s first few games in charge – helping Spurs win five of the six Premier League matches he has started under the Italian. In that time, Spurs kept five clean sheets, conceding two.
But a groin issue has seen Skipp since miss the last 12 Premier League games, and the injury has become infected. He is expected to be on the sidelines for most of the remaining six games – if not all of them.
Conte told his press conference that while Skipp has been handed a new deal until June 2027 – the player is “frustrated” with his injury and is having a “bit of a problem” in trying to recover from the issue.
“I’m very happy for Skippy because we are talking about a good player, a young player from an academy. We know very well a player who has developed. He’s not only a good player, we are talking about a fantastic guy.
“He’s having a bit of problem with his injury. I know his frustration. I think his new contract shows we trust him a lot. He’ll be very important for the present and future of Tottenham,” Conte said, as per Football London.
Conte on Skipp: Tottenham star’s deal shows how much he is rated
Conte cares about his players, especially the ones he knows are going to have a big impact now and in the future. Skipp is certainly one of those. He knows it is important to reward Skipp, and to keep his morale up.
While he might be disillusioned with his injury, and perhaps the fact Rodrigo Bentancur has come in and impressed in his absence, handing him a new deal reminds Skipp of his importance to the side. Smart, from Conte.
