Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn helped the Netherlands book their World Cup spot last night.
Louis van Gaal’s side secured a 2-0 win at home to Norway to seal their place in Qatar next year.
Bergwijn, a £25 million signing by Tottenham in 2020, opened the scoring on 84 minutes and then set up Memphis Depay late on.
Quite a few Spurs players enjoyed dazzling international breaks and it may not be a coincidence that it came after working with Antonio Conte in North London, after he replaced Nuno Espirito Santo.
Here’s how some Lilywhites fans are reacting to Bergwijn’s heroics for the Dutch last night:
Confidence
There’s no doubt that Bergwijn is a player.
But consistency has been a big problem for most of his two-year spell in North London and if Conte can get him scoring on a regular basis, it could make the world of difference.
The former PSV winger has no problem finding himself in good positions to score, but four Premier League goals in 40 games tells its own story.
The good news is that this performance will spike his confidence and it really wouldn’t be a surprise if he starts doing the business for Tottenham.
For how long, though, depends entirely on him.
