Antonio Conte has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn is injured.

Tottenham had a rotten Tuesday after drawing 1-1 away to Southampton, who had 10 men for more than half the match.

And the Spurs manager revealed to Football London afterwards that Bergwijn sat out the contest through injury.

And added that he would not be back in time for the trip to Watford on Saturday.

He said: “Steven is injured. During the game against Crystal Palace he felt a problem with his calf and together he’s injured with Lo Celso, Romero and Sessegnon. They won’t be back for the weekend.”

Another blow

This is another piece of bad news for the Lilywhites.

Say what you like about the Dutch winger but he was Tottenham’s best player by a distance in a League Cup win over West Ham United last week.

Okay so he hasn’t been doing it on a regular basis for Spurs, but his performance against the Hammers was a big reminder that Bergwijn, on his day, is an asset.

In theory, Conte’s side should still have enough to win at Vicarage Road, with Claudio Ranieri’s outfit struggling in a massive way as of late.

But Bergwijn joining the injured list really is a big negative for the Italian coach.

Dropped points

Make no bones about it – this was two dropped points for Tottenham.

Even if the North Londoners went a goal down, the fact they had a man mor than the Saints for 50 minutes illustrates that a 1-1 draw is a horrible result.

They were a tad unlucky, with Harry Kane having a goal chalked off, and Fraser Forster fortuitously avoiding an own goal.

But still, Bergwijn might’ve been the difference against Southampton and no doubt his absenece could be felt again at Watford.
