Tottenham Hotspur fans think Antonio Conte will have enjoyed watching Matt Doherty performing last night.
Doherty catches the eye
The Spurs full-back played 90 minutes for Ireland as they picked up a credible 0-0 draw with Portugal.
Ireland stood firm, with the Tottenham right-back helping to keep Cristiano Ronaldo and co. relatively quiet for the entire game.
Doherty was deployed as a right-wing back for the contest – and his display will have shown Conte that he does have plenty of quality.
Doherty actually nearly scored a late winner in the contest, but his goal was controversially ruled out.
Spurs fans were very impressed with their 29-year-old’s display though.
Here is the best reaction to his display on social media website Twitter.
Chances to come?
Doherty is yet to really feature for Tottenham since Conte arrived as manager.
He was brought off the bench late on against Everton, but Emerson Royal has quickly become the North London club’s first choice at right-back.
That being said, Conte’s arrival could well help Doherty.
Since moving to Spurs he has struggled to really show the best of his ability.
However, a switch to a system which includes wing-back could be just what Doherty needs.
The £15 million man (Guardian) has generally shown his best form in a wing-back role, when with Wolves, and he may well become a genuine contender to start if he can start delivering the same quality of performance at club level as he did for his country last night.
