Antonio Conte was speaking in a press conference on Friday ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s clash against Liverpool on Sunday – and he might have just dropped a hint that he will sign a new deal, when asked about Jurgen Klopp.
The 53-year-old manager has transformed Tottenham, having celebrated a year in charge of Spurs this week. He took over a club languishing just inside the top half, failing to get past the Europa Conference League stages.
Now, Spurs are a Champions League club again – finishing top of Group D on Tuesday night. They are a much better side; nastier, better equipped, more depth. Even if, they have numerous injuries at the moment under Conte.
His future is in doubt, though. Conte signed an 18-month deal until June 2023 when taking over. Spurs fans are desperate for Conte to remain in the dugout – and Spurs do have the option of extending his deal by 12 months.
However, they will want to offer him an entirely new deal – to keep Conte at Spurs beyond the summer of 2024. So, will he sign a new deal? Well he might have just offered a hint, when discussing Klopp’s tenure at Liverpool.

He said: “His story speaks for him. He has changed Liverpool. Liverpool didn’t win for a long period. He needed four years to help Liverpool win. It is important for the coach to have time. Liverpool can be a good example for us.”
Conte drops hint he will sign Tottenham deal when asked about Klopp
Stating that Klopp required time to take Liverpool from a similar position to the one Tottenham were in, when he took over, is true. But to then link it to Spurs and say Liverpool are a good example for “us” to follow is encouraging.
To mention that it took Liverpool four years and Klopp to make them a heavyweight, before saying it is a good example for Spurs to follow – suggests he sees his future at Tottenham beyond the end of the current campaign.
So, while he might not have intended it, Conte is clearly thinking beyond the current campaign at Tottenham. Hopefully for Spurs fans, and for the Premier League, the box-office boss will sign a new deal to stay at Spurs.
