There has been a lot of talk about Conor McGregor potentially facing Jorge Masvidal at the White House, and it is not going away any time soon.

Since Donald Trump announced that UFC would be hosting an event at the White House in June, several big names in the sport have shown interest in being part of it.

McGregor was one of the first to respond, quickly reaching out to UFC president Dana White to express his desire to fight on such a historic card.

The former dual champion made another move towards fighting again by rejoining the drug testing pool last year, putting him back in line for a comeback.

And while fans were expecting him to step into the cage against Michael Chandler next, White threw cold water on those hopes with a surprising announcement that seemed to end any chance of that matchup happening soon.

UFC commentator Michael Bisping outlines reasons why McGregor vs Masvidal makes sense

Once the UFC president made it clear that he had lost interest in a McGregor vs Chandler bout, attention quickly shifted to other possible opponents for the former two-division champion’s comeback.

Shortly after, ex-BMF titleholder Jorge Masvidal dropped hints about a major announcement tied to the UFC’s White House event. That added fuel to the speculation that talks might be underway between McGregor and ‘Gamebred’.

Bisping weighed in on the potential match-up, giving his take on why it could be a good fit for both fighters. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Bisping said: “We might be getting Conor McGregor vs the one and only, Jorge Masvidal, at the White House.”

“If you ask me, that actually makes a lot of sense… I do believe that Conor McGregor will be on the White House card… Conor McGregor vs Jorge Masvidal, that would be a sensational match-up.

“Conor McGregor vs Jorge Masvidal makes all the sense in the world because for McGregor coming back, he’s the big star, they want him to win. Simple as that. They do. The sport of mixed martial arts is a better place with people like Conor McGregor.

“The White House, being the magnitude of the event – it sells itself. Masvidal is entertaining, Conor McGregor is entertaining. The two of them are going to stand toe-to-toe and bang it out… It would be a throwback, it would be a nostalgic fight.”

Despite this support from Bisping, there are questions about whether Masvidal can still perform at an elite level. He has not fought in the promotion since 2023 when his losing streak extended to four straight defeats.

Why Dana White dismissed a Conor McGregor vs Jorge Masvidal match-up in the past

Rumours of a potential fight between McGregor and Masvidal have been around for quite some time.

The two fighters had dropped hints about squaring off long before now, but when asked in 2022 if the bout could happen, White was quick to shut it down, responding with a clear “hell no.”

White’s main reason back then was size. He felt ‘The Notorious’ was simply too small to take on Masvidal at that point. It is not an issue anymore though, as both are now well-suited to meet at welterweight.
