Aston Villa finally won for the first time in 2017 as they beat Derby County 1-0 at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon.
After Monday’s 2-0 defeat at Newcastle United, Villa had made it seven defeats in eight league games, picking up just one point since the turn of the year.
Steve Bruce was coming under major pressure from supporters heading into Saturday’s clash with Derby County, given that Villa were in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle.
However, Villa did claim the win they needed to ease fears, as James Chester headed home a scrappy goal, which proved to be the winner as Villa picked up a 1-0 win over Derby.
Whilst Leandro Bacuna was sent off late on, Villa claimed a crucial three points, and they now sit eight points clear of the bottom three, putting some more daylight between themselves and the dreaded drop zone.
After the final whistle, winger Andre Green – who started the game – took to Twitter to celebrate, noting that the team had to stick at it to get the result they needed, before praising the fans for their support.

Backup goalkeeper Mark Bunn was only on the bench against Derby, but he was delighted with a ‘great result’ from his team-mates in a vital game.
Midfielder Conor Hourihane missed out completely with a dead leg, but the Irishman sent a message to fans after the final whistle to celebrate a great win, but didn’t give any indication on whether he would be back to take on Bristol City on Tuesday.
