Conor Gallagher’s situation at Atletico Madrid appears to have shifted, giving Manchester United fresh hope of signing the midfielder for 2026.
Reinforcing the midfield is high on Ineos’ agenda heading into the new year, and Gallagher remains one of the main targets under consideration.
United made their interest clear this summer, reaching out to inquire about the 25-year-old before deadline day passed.
Ineos decided to hold off until January 2026 to address the position. The winter budget is expected to be tight, putting Gallagher ahead of options like Elliot Anderson or Carlos Baleba for now.
Although there are questions about whether he would truly strengthen United’s midfield, the Englishman seems eager for a move.

Speaking to United in Focus, transfer insider Graeme Bailey addressed the possibility of a deal between Gallagher and the Red Devils.
“Gallagher has become increasingly frustrated at Atletico. He is settled in the Spanish capital, but he firmly believes he could and should be in contention for England. That is not going to happen without playing.
“Gallagher is aware of the interest and I’m told that United is an appealing option to him.
“United are aware that other clubs are showing an interest, and they will have a decision to make in the coming weeks ahead of the January window.
“Despite being pleased with their form in recent weeks, belief within the club is that additional holding midfield options are required and Gallagher could very well offer that.”
After a mixed first season in Spain, Gallagher remained hopeful that his fortunes would turn around at Atletico Madrid. Unfortunately, things have not gone his way – he has only managed two starts in La Liga this season.
United have been kept updated on Gallagher’s status throughout. They have maintained that a move would only be considered if the player was open to it – which now seems more likely than ever before.
Conor Gallagher loan move would go against Ruben Amorim’s promise
The Atletico midfielder is reportedly willing to join United on a short-term deal, likely lasting until the end of this season.
While Amorim is in the market for an athletic midfielder and Gallagher fits that profile, his arrival would likely limit Kobbie Mainoo’s chances of playing regularly at Old Trafford.
Amorim has also stated he is not looking for short-term solutions, and a loan deal for the 25-year-old fits that description.
While Casemiro has been heavily relied upon this season, adding Gallagher on a brief loan does not address the need for a more lasting fix in midfield.
