Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira is optimistic of beating Leeds United and Newcastle United to the signing of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, according to The Sun.

What’s the story?

Palace, Leeds and Newcastle all are interested in signing Gallagher on loan from Premier League rivals Chelsea.

The 2021 Champions League winners themselves are ready to send the 21-year-old midfielder out on loan.

Palace, who recently appointed Arsenal legend Vieira as their new manager, are ‘optimistic’ that they can see off competition from Newcastle and Leeds for the youngster.

Transfer battle

Palace might be optimistic of a deal for Gallagher, but Newcastle and Leeds are unlikely to give up easily.

According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle have already held talks with Chelsea over a loan deal for Gallagher.

Football.London reported this week that Leeds have made a presentation to the youngster to show how he fits into their plans.

Birmingham City manager Lee Bowyer worked with Gallagher at Charlton, and told talkSPORT in October 2019 that “his willingness and work rate are unreal”.

It will eventually boil down to what Gallagher wants to do and where he thinks he would get the most playing time.

The England Under-21 international scored two goals and gave two assists in 30 Premier League games during his loan spell at West Bromwich Albion last season.
