Sunderland striker Connor Wickham has told the Sunderland Echo that his side missed a big opportunity against Leicester City.
The Black Cats could only draw 0-0 with Leicester, and Wickham was frustrated that his side were not able to get the three points.
If Sunderland had won the fixture they would have confirmed their top flight status for next season, but they will now have to pick up a point from their remaining two games to be assured of being a Premier League club.
“We heard Tottenham had gone ahead [against Hull City], but we’ll probably see it as an opportunity where we could have got points,” Wickham said.
“I got told by one of the players and then we heard from the fans. But results went our way, so we need one point and that will do it.
“Maybe we missed an opportunity to clinch it, but we’ll take it, move on and we’re still confident.”
The worry for Sunderland comes as they are in a position where they simply cannot afford to miss out on any more opportunities.
The Black Cats have struggled to win all season and passing up chances to claim victories could prove costly now.
Sunderland have fixtures against Arsenal and Chelsea to come and it means that their run-in could not be any tougher.
If they do fail to get another point, their fate will be left in the hands of others – and wins for Newcastle United and Hull City on the final day could condemn the Wearsiders to playing Championship football next term.
