Spurs and the rest of the Premier League have submitted their 25-man squads.
Tottenham Hotspur have made the surprise decision to include defender Connor Oglivie in their 25-man Premier League squad, despite sending him on loan to League One side Gillingham.
The 22-year-old went on loan to Gillingham last season, clocking up 42 appearances which saw him show his versatility by turning out at left-back, left wing and even in central midfield.
He rejoined the third-tier side this summer, but has since been included in Mauricio Pochettino’s squad for the Premier League. Over the age of 21, the England Under-17 international cannot be used without being registered.
It could well be that Spurs have included a recall clause, with Pochettino potentially worried about a defensive crisis. Inserting an option to bring Oglivie back could be used if injuries and suspensions clock up – meaning Oglivie would have to be included if he was to return and play.
Indeed, another reason for his inclusion could be the fact that he is a homegrown player that has trained with Spurs throughout his entire career. His addition to the squad allows Spurs to meet the guidelines.
The move to name Oglivie is even more surprising when considered that the defender has never appeared for Spurs’ first team, as well as entering the final 12 months of his current deal.
But his appearances in the second string at Spurs, and indeed at Gillingham on loan, could have caught the eye of Pochettino and that could well be why he has been included in the north Londoners’ side.
