Sunderland head into tonight’s game on the back of a fine run of form that has seen them go 16 games unbeaten in all competitions.
They currently sit in third spot in the League One table, seven points adrift of league leaders Portsmouth, with a game in hand over the south coast outfit.
All of their focus will be on the FA Cup tonight, however, as they look to set up a third round tie with Championship side Bolton Wanderers.
Walsall, meanwhile, head into tonight’s clash in the midst of a poor run of form that has seen them win just once in their last seven games in all competitions.
The Midlands club currently sit in 10th spot in the table, and still have a realistic chance of forcing their way into the play-off spots, with just five points separating them and sixth placed Doncaster Rovers.
Both sides will be keen to make it through to the next stage of the FA Cup, for financial reasons if nothing else.
