Liverpool are well and truly in this title race, and with Manchester City in League Cup action this weekend, the Reds could end the day ahead of Manuel Pellegrini’s men and breathing down the necks of Chelsea and Arsenal.
This is the start of a tough run away from Anfield, and the Saints will know they are more than capable of downing Brendan Rodgers’ side this afternoon. In fact they will be hoping to maintain a recent habit, having beaten Liverpool on their last three visits to St Mary’s.
The Reds are enjoying a fine campaign, but they will have to put that particular hoodoo behind them and take three points here if they want to keep their title dream alive.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side will be hoping to finish as high up the table as possible, and will not have given up hope of overtaking Newcastle and enjoying a top-eight finish, which would be an absolutely outstanding achievement.
