Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has brought in three new players so far this summer in the form of Javier Manquillo, Florian Lejeune, Jacob Murphy and Mikel Merino and all four feature this afternoon with the latter pair the bench.

That is unlikely to be the end of Newcastle’s summer business. The problem could be the inflated prices average players are now commanding and the Magpies’ desire not to be drawn into bidding wars, no matter how much they need additional strength in depth.

Benitez built a side capable of securing Championship promotion last time out but he is well aware of the additional challenges facing Newcastle when the Premier League campaign kicks off later this week.

The Spaniard has today’s match and the weekend meeting with Hellas Verona to settle on his starting XI for the first domestic match of the new season against Tottenham Hotspur on 13 August.
