Speaking on the Seaman Says Podcast, David Seaman has been discussing Fabian Schar amid his brilliant start to this season for Newcastle United.

Many perhaps would’ve expected Schar to drop out of the Newcastle XI this term. After all, Dan Burn was fantastic last season and Sven Botman was signed in the summer, but rather than wilting away, Schar has become one of the Magpies’ most important players.

The defender has been a brick wall at the back, while he’s not been too bad up the other end either, netting a wonderful goal against Nottingham Forest on the opening day of the season.

Seaman has been very impressed by Schar, stating that he almost looks like a new signing.

Schar’s transformation

Seaman heaped praise upon Schar.

“One player I really wanted to highlight was Fabian Schar. This has to be his best season in a Newcastle shirt,” Seaman’s co-host said.

“Yeah, totally, like you say, he’s almost like a new signing. He’s playing with confidence, he’s defending well, last season they were shipping goals for fun, but the confidence is coming through the manager and the coaching and they’re getting results,” Seaman said.

Quality breeds quality

Seaman is absolutely right, Schar has really stepped up in this Newcastle team, but he’s not the only one.

The likes of Joelinton, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron have all stepped up a gear or two since the PIF takeover, and that’s because they’re being pushed by a talented coach and talented teammates.

Think about it, if Schar is coming into training everyday and working with a coach like Eddie Howe and competing with someone like Sven Botman, he’ll have to raise his levels.

Newcastle have bred a culture of good coaching and healthy competition and that’s helped them improve so much in such a short period of time.
