Michael Owen has stated that he is ‘concerned for the future’ of Leeds United because he doesn’t think they have the quality needed from a Premier League team.
The former England striker highlighted one issue he has with Leeds and how under Jesse Marsch ‘they don’t score enough goals’, despite doing so under Marcelo Bielsa.
On Sunday, the Whites recorded a 0-0 draw against struggling Aston Villa, despite being down to ten men from the start of the second half.
It was a much better performance from the team that conceded five at Brentford prior to the international break.
Nonetheless, after seven games, Leeds have nine points to their name, three points off sixth and with a game in hand on some of those above them.
Added with that, they have also scored and conceded ten – only Leicester in the bottom half of the table have scored more than the Yorkshire outfit and they are also on the same number of goals as Chelsea.
Despite that, Owen is seemingly worried by what he is seeing from this all-action Marsch side, as he told Premier League Productions (02/10/22 at 6:55 pm).
“On face value, you think, ‘oh, you only just survived last season and now you have lost your best players’,” said Owen. “Now, they have recruited, but who knows what they will turn out like? They don’t score enough goals.
“Under the previous manager, they scored and conceded loads of goals. But nowadays, they don’t really look like scoring a lot of goals.
“So, I would be quite concerned. They have had a decent enough start to the season, but I will be concerned for their future.
“They are one of the teams that lack quality in the Premier League and they could be one of them battling it out for survival at the end of the season.”
LEEDS FANS SHOULDN’T BE WORRIED
Owen is just waffling and Leeds shouldn’t worry too much about their future because they will perform a lot better than the last campaign.
It needs to be remembered that, for most of the last term, they were under a different coach and then they had injury after injury which just continued to derail their campaign.
And despite losing Kalvin Phillips to Manchester City and Raphinha to Barcelona in the summer, the players have reacted well to their departures.
But, most importantly, the new signings are looking pretty good, with Tyler Adams looking like a standout purchase, as he proved during Leeds’ draw against Aston Villa over the weekend.
