Would RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner choose Manchester United over Tottenham Hotspur?
If Tottenham Hotspur wanted to sign Timo Werner in the near future, the last thing they wanted to hear was the prolific RB Leipzig striker admitting that he is a fan of a Premier League rival.
In just over a year-and-a-half, he’s gone from a talented yet erratic winger who was relegated with Stuttgart to one of Europe’s most feared centre-forwards and arguably the next great Germany number nine.
No wonder Spurs fans were excited, then, that Werner namechecked the North London giants when admitting to SportBild in September that he harbours ambitions of playing for a European giant one day.
There’s one club in England that Werner would jump at the chance of playing for, however. And it’s not Tottenham.
“As a small boy, you always dream of the huge clubs,” Werner, Golden Boot winner in Germany’s victorious Confederations Cup campaign in the summer, told Sky Sports. “In earlier days, it was Manchester United.
“Under Sir Alex Ferguson, they always had great players, they always won. As a small boy, you always prefer the teams which are winning.”
Scoring 26 Bundesliga goals in 31 games for Leipzig, there are few clubs in world football who would struggle to find room for the rampant Werner in their frontline.
And if United join Spurs in the race, Mauricio Pochettino’s side would have a challenge on their hands luring Werner to North London.
