Erling Haaland is a man in demand – but don’t expect to see him joining Liverpool any time soon.
Hopes were raised when Dharmesh Sheth told Sky Sports that Haaland would like to play for Jurgen Klopp, leaving fans dreaming of a deal to see Haaland arrive at Anfield.
The Borussia Dortmund striker may well be on the move this summer, but it doesn’t look like Anfield will be his destination after all.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has told Give Me Sport that a move to Liverpool looks ‘complicated’ because the Reds are actually happy with what they have right now.
That’s something of a surprise after a frustrating season, but Romano believes that Haaland will not be joining Liverpool unless there is a change of heart, with a big-money striker signing just not on their radar.
“Yes, there is a chance (he could leave this summer) just because it depends on the Champions League,” said Romano. “First of all, I want to say that Erling is happy with Borussia Dortmund, he is tied in with Borussia Dortmund so he’s not saying ‘Okay, I want to leave the club, I’m desperate to leave the club’ but if there if there is a good opportunity, he’s leaving.”
“(In terms if who wants him), I think Liverpool is complicated in this moment because they are happy with the team they have so they’re not planning to do something like a central striker for this money but obviously, I’m not the Sporting Director of Liverpool but let’s see what happens!”
“But in this moment I see Liverpool complicated and and let’s see what happens with Manchester United. For sure Solskjaer wants him but it’s not easy to sign him this summer because his release clause is for next summer. So you have to deal with Borussia Dortmund, negotiate with Borussia Dortmund, it won’t be easy,” he added.
Maybe Liverpool believe Diogo Jota is their long-term answer, or that Roberto Firmino can rediscover his goalscoring touch, but many will be disappointed that Liverpool won’t even try for Haaland.
What makes it even worse is that the Manchester Evening News now report that Liverpool’s rivals Manchester City are now confident of signing Haaland as Sergio Aguero’s successor.
That won’t be cheap, but Liverpool fans would surely be gutted if they go from believing Haaland wants to join them, to seeing him score against them in the future.
