Speaking on his YouTube channel, Alasdair Gold has been speaking about Tottenham and the impending permanent signing of Cristian Romero.
The Argentine, of course, signed for Spurs last summer on an initial loan deal, and while it was widely expected that this transfer would be made permanent this summer, no announcement has been made on that front yet.
Worry not, according to Gold, this announcement is imminent, but it hasn’t been finalised yet as their buy-option for the Argentine is set to be triggered on a specific date that hasn’t been reached yet.
What’s been said?
Gold spoke about Romero joining Tottenham permanently.
“Cristian Romero, I’ve had a lot of people asking why it hasn’t been announced yet, really, quite simply it’s because it hasn’t actually happened yet. I’ve been asking around about that. When it was first announced it was really complicated and confusing. Spurs announced it as a permanent, Atalanta announced it as a loan, and we now know it is a loan. Everyone I’ve spoken to about this deal has said it’s a complicated one,” Gold said.
“From what I understand about it, it initially was a season-long loan with an option not an obligation to buy him for £42.5m, but it was pretty much an obligation because the criteria that had to be met for it to become permanent were so likely to happen that it was an obligation in all but name.”
“It was always expected that he would be a Tottenham player for the long-term, what I understand about what happens next is that it will become permanent on a specific date that hasn’t happened yet, I think it’s soon, and when it does happen there will be a full announcement from the club. This is just me guessing, but he was signed on August 6th, so I wonder if it would be a year on, a one-year loan rather than a season loan.”

August 6th
Gold made a guess that August 6th could be the day that this deal is done, and that would make the world of sense.
A one-year loan agreement isn’t unheard of, and that may be the date that Spurs officially sign Romero on a permanent basis.
Of course, the formalities of this deal don’t particularly matter – for all intents and purposes the defender is already a Spurs player.
Indeed, he has a new shirt number, he’s been playing in pre-season friendlies and will probably play in Spurs’ opening match against Southampton in a fortnight’s time.
Romero isn’t a done deal yet, but this one is just a matter of time.
