Some Arsenal fans on Twitter have been left raving about Mohamed Elneny’s performance on Saturday night.

The former Basel midfielder looked to be a ghost in North London as far as saving his Gunners career goes, having spent last season on loan at Besiktas in Turkey.

But Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta started him in yesterday’s Community Shield win over Liverpool, giving him 90 minutes alongside Granit Xhaka in midfield.

And the 28-year-old, a £7 million signing by Arsene Wenger back in 2016, gave a very good account of himself at Wembley, used the ball pretty well and helped to shield Arteta’s defence effectively.

Based on this performance, the Spanish coach might not be so quick to offload Elneny and here’s how some fans of the Emirates Stadium club reacted to his performance on Twitter yesterday:

Despite his showing, it seems unlikely that Elneny has much future at Arsenal.

The Londoners are linked to the likes of Thomas Partey, Dani Ceballos and Houssem Aouar to name but a few, and even signing two of them – which isn’t impossible – is likely to result in Elneny being offloaded.

Then again, Arteta has proven time and again that your attitude on the training ground will lead to chances on the pitch and maybe, just maybe, he has thrown himself a lifeline here.
