Borussia Monchengladbach star Denis Zakaria could boost Arsenal and Everton’s reported hopes of a free transfer by pricing himself out of a summer switch to Borussia Dortmund.

That’s according to Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, who note BVB lack the funds for any large-scale investments right now. The Westfalenstadion natives’ difficult financial outlook, therefore, is thwarting Marco Rose’s attempt to reunite with his former Fohlen midfielder.

Dortmund have chased Zakaria’s switch from North Rhine-Westphalia rivals Gladbach for a long time. But club chiefs have started to cool their pursuit as they wrestle the continued strain the coronavirus pandemic – and games without fans again – has on their accounts.

BVB will trim their wage bill in the summer once Axel Witsel’s contract expires. But much of Rose’s activity will depend on Erling Haaland and there is currently little suggesting that will include Zakaria. Even though the Swiss is leaving Gladbach as a free agent this summer.

Zakaria knows he can market himself strongly in the off-season and already has a wealth of clubs considering moves. Manchester United are also weighing up offering Gladbach a fee in January after opening preliminary discussions with the 25-year-old’s representatives.

Arsenal have also maintained their interest in a transfer for Zakaria and likewise held talks with the Monchengladbach dynamo’s representatives. Fussball Transfers note Mikel Arteta will likely have to secure the Gunners some European football to seal his arrival, however.

Additionally, Rose will be sure to see that Dortmund rival Everton and Arsenal for Zakaria’s transfer if BVB can afford the Borussia Monchengladbach star’s desired salary this summer. The Westfalenstadion boss was full of praise for the Swiss whilst in charge of Die Fohlen.

“He is a very complete footballer, who still has a lot of development potential,” Rose told Sky Germany last year. “He has incredible dynamics, an understanding of the game and is not yet at the end of his development.”
