Liverpool fans are not happy about Anthony Taylor being appointed as referee for their game against Manchester United on Thursday.
Liverpool head into the contest knowing that they will surely have to take the three points if they are to stand any chance of making it back into the top four.
However, the news of Taylor’s appointment hasn’t gone down well with Liverpool fans.
Taylor is Manchester born, which has led to complaints from Reds supporters saying that he shouldn’t be in charge of such a big game for both sides.
United would surely love nothing more than to end Jurgen Klopp’s side’s European chances in midweek, which means Taylor could have his work cut out officiating the game.
Taylor has previously caused anger among Liverpool supporters, with John Aldridge saying in 2019 that he should never be allowed that referee a Reds game again.
He wrote in the Liverpool Echo: “We are told he is an Altrincham supporter so that is why they deem it acceptable for him to officiate Liverpool and Everton matches, as well as Manchester City and Manchester United ones.
“Well Mike Dean is a Tranmere Rovers fan but has been largely kept away from fixtures involving the Merseyside clubs (apart from the recent Anfield derby). So where’s the difference?”
Despite the complaints, Taylor has continued to referee Liverpool games since though.
Taylor has taken charge of five of Klopp’s side’s matches so far this term, and the Reds have had mixed success.
Liverpool have won two, lost two and drawn one of the games Taylor has been in charge of so far this season.
