Former Tottenham Hotspur employee Damien Comolli has suggested that Spurs did well to finish where they did last season.
Former Tottenham Hotspur Director of Football Damien Comolli was full of praise for the way his former employers competed in the Premier League last season, when he spoke to talkSPORT.
While Spurs missed out on their annual pursuit of a place in the Champions League, Comolli has suggested why the past year can’t be considered a mediocre period for the club.
Tottenham finished last season as the closest challengers for a place in the Premier League’s top four, ahead of Liverpool and Southampton, who threatened at points to finish above them.
“I’m not sure they had a mediocre season. They had a new manager, which again brings a period of instability, finishing fifth, I thought they had a very good season,” he told talkSPORT.
“Finishing fifth in the Premier League when the team has maybe the sixth or seventh wage bill, I think is a real achievement, especially with a new manager.”
A platform for progression
Tottenham now have a platform where they can look to progress after the stability which was created throughout the past year.
They have a young team, with key players settled in key positions in all areas of the side and a manager in Mauricio Pochettino who has had a year to get used to his new surroundings.
If he can add some attacking support to the squad in the form of someone to play out wide and someone to support Harry Kane, the team will be in even better shape.

It’s also significant that the key individuals in the side haven’t left.
Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and Kane both represent extremely valuable products for the football club and Spurs need to continue resisting the urge to cash in on either to improve their chances over the course of the next year.
