Former Celtic playmaker Kris Commons has told The Scotsman that he believes new Rangers signing Jason Cummings can be a success – if Graeme Murty points in him in the right direction at Ibrox.

Commons played with one-time Scotland international Cummings at Hibernian, and has backed the striker to be a success despite scoring only four goals in 17 games at the City Ground since his move south.

The striker already has a larger than life reputation in Scottish football after scoring 23 goals in 40 games to push Hibernian into the Scottish Premiership last season, but Commons has warned Rangers that they must calm him down.

Commons believes he must be on his best behaviour if he is to impress with all eyes on him now, something which Commons claims Cummings has not had before at Hibernian or Forest.

“Jason is a terrific player, he has a lot of ability. He just needs an arm round him,” Commons said. “I think he needs a manager who is going to send him in the right direction.

“He can score goals, he can score spectacular goals but he has a side of him as well that can be a bit naughty. He is at a club now where all eyes will be on him. I don’t think all eyes were on him at Nottingham Forest or Hibs.

“Jason has had a past where he has had to grow up, he has done a few things on and off the field that is a little bit immature. “But he is a player that has so much ability that if he can take them [Rangers] to the next level.”

The 22-year-old has been confirmed as the Gers’ fourth signing of the transfer window under Murty after joining the Glasgow side on loan until the end of the season from English Championship side Nottingham Forest.

Cummings joins Brighton’s Jamie Murphy and QPR’s Jamie Goss on loan following the permanent signing of Declan John, while Norwich City defender Russell Martin is nearing a completed move to Ibrox.

The striker could make his debut on Sunday afternoon in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup against Fraserburgh.
