Liverpool kick off their season on Saturday with a Charity Shield encounter against Manchester City.
The Reds will be determined to draw first blood against Pep Guardiola’s side ahead of another season that promises they’ll both be challenging for the Premier League title.
Liverpool missed out on the crown in fairly agonising circumstances last time around, with City scoring three goals in 15 minutes to ultimately beat Aston Villa on the final day of the campaign.
In any case, the fact that Jurgen Klopp’s outfit came relatively close to winning a quadruple last term indicates that they’ll be among the teams to beat again during the 2022-23 campaign.
However, commentator for ESPN, Ian Darke, has predicted that the Sky Blues will be champions again.
On a graphic on ESPN’s YouTube channel, Darke’s predictions were displayed and it clearly showed City first, ahead of Liverpool in second.
With Kalvin Phillips and Erling Haaland signed up, to name a few, it is possible that Guardiola’s troops will be narrow favourites to win the title again come next May.
However, it would be a mistake to automatically rule out Liverpool.
Despite losing Sadio Mane, a core member of the squad that’s achieved so much under the German manager, they have also signed a certain Darwin Nunez for a club-record amount.
And Nunez, like Haaland, is a number nine so it’ll be fascinating to see how they compete against one another tomorrow – and again throughout the season.
