It has been a very mixed first season for Thomas Partey at Arsenal, it must be said.

Arsenal shelled out £45 million to sign the big Ghana midfielder from Atletico Madrid in October.

But three injuries and a lack of form have made it quite difficult for the 27-year-old to adapt to life with the Gunners.

Then again, Partey has of course also enjoyed some barnstorming performances under Mikel Arteta, like in the victory at Manchester United earlier in the campaign.

But as things stand, you couldn’t definitively say that he has been a brilliant or dreadful signing just yet because it’s still very early.

Nevertheless, a football commentator has claimed on ESPN that he’s been the worst signing of last summer, in his opinion.

Ian Darke said when the panel were asked about the worst addition of the campaign: “Thomas Partey hasn’t been ripping up too many trees at Arsenal. Not yet. £45 million.”

Is he right? Well, no.

Partey hasn’t even been the worst signing at Arsenal, if we’re honest.

Yes, Willian has enjoyed an upturn in fortunes a little in recent weeks, but only because for the first seven months he did virtually nothing, despite playing almost every week.

And although he didn’t cost Arsenal a penny in terms of transfer fee, the Emirates Stadium side gave him a £220,000-a-week contract over the course of three years, which is a commitment of over £30 million according to The Sun.

Partey, at 27, can and probably will go on to be a big star in North London, but it’s difficult to see how Willian is going to prove himself a good investment.
