West Ham are said to be interested in signing Harry Maguire as David Moyes aims to strengthen his defensive options.

The Hammers are believed to be considering an offer to take the England international on loan after he fell out of favour under Erik ten Hag – according to the Daily Star.

If a deal does materialise for Maguire, the move would seemingly come with the approval of Rio Ferdinand.

What’s the story?

Well, Ferdinand – who made 145 appearances for West Ham after coming through the academy – called Maguire a “commanding” figure as recently as November after England defeated Iran by a 6-2 scoreline at the World Cup.

Despite making just four Premier League starts for Manchester United this season, the West Ham target was entrusted to start in Qatar by Gareth Southgate, and he was arguably one of England’s best performers.

Speaking on BBC One about Maguire’s display against Iran, Ferdinand said: “Harry justified being picked, there were question marks and maybe eyebrows raised when we saw the team but the decision the manager had was definitely justified.

“He played a part in the goal for Saka, the manager mentioned the control of the game, he was instrumental in that. Everything other than the goal he did perfectly, a commanding performance.”

Harry Maguire could transform West Ham

Unfairly, the Manchester United No.5 has become a laughing stock since his £80m move to Old Trafford.

Maguire’s struggles for the Red Devils have largely made people forget about how effective he can be for a side not expected to have 60% possession every week and one who do not adopt a high defensive line.

At West Ham, Maguire’s aerial ability and talent in bringing the ball out from the back could transform the Hammers, allowing the likes of Declan Rice to play ten yards higher up the pitch.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as we wouldn’t be surprised to see a deal materialise.
