Tottenham Hotspur confirmed their fourth summer signing on Friday.
Spurs revealed that they had signed 18-year-old Pape Matar Sarr from Metz.
According to The Athletic, Sarr has cost Tottenham £15.4 million – including bonuses – and will spend the 2021-22 campaign on loan back at the French club.
He follows Pierluigi Gollini, Cristian Romero and Bryan Gil in joining the Lilywhites this summer.
And the player himself has reacted to the move on Twitter, with club legend Graham Roberts responding.
Saliba
There’s a touch of the William Saliba’s about this deal by Tottenham.
Their North London rivals Arsenal signed Saliba from Saint Etienne as an 18-year-old in 2019 and loaned him straight back to the Ligue 1 side.
But hopefully for the Lilywhites, he is more successful in North London than Saliba, who hasn’t even made a senior debut for the Gunners yet.
Sarr is a defensive midfielder and long term this might give Oliver Skipp a kick up the you know what.
Skipp operates in a similar role and if he doesn’t have a stellar season with the Lilywhites between now and May, he’s at risk of being usurped by Sarr next term.
Remember, Tottenham already have Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, their first-choice option for that role and with the Dane being only 26, there’s no chance of him leaving the club anytime soon.
