Paul Merson has written in The Daily Star that Tottenham Hotspur head coach Antonio Conte needs to start Rodrigo Bentancur regularly.

The former Arsenal star was not impressed by Conte’s decision to leave Bentancur on the bench at the start of Tottenham’s Premier League game against Bournemouth last weekend.

The 25-year-old came on as a substitute in the 58th minute and scored the winner in injury time.

Bentancur has scored two goals and created six big chances in 29 Premier League appearances for Spurs so far in his career.

The Uruguay international midfielder has made 11 starts and one substitute appearance in the Premier League for Tottenham so far this season.

The Tottenham no. 30 has scored two goals and provided two assists in those matches.

Bentancur has also made six appearances in the UEFA Champions League for Antonio Conte’s side so far this campaign.

The former Juventus star has score one goal in those matches.

Of the 13 Premier League matches that Tottenham have played so far this season, Bentancur has started 11, but Merson seems to suggest that the Uruguayan should always start, which is not always possible as Conte needs to use his squad and give rest to certain players from time time.

Merson wrote: “The midfield line up at Bournemouth was so negative. It’s like come on, you’ve got good players.

“When Rodrigo Bentancur was let off the leash, he looked a world-beater. It needs to happen more often.”
