Chris Sutton and Robbie Savage were left surprised on BBC’s 606 programme after a caller claimed that Arsenal’s David Luiz is better than Thiago Silva – and he was a Chelsea supporter.

Ironically enough, last summer Arsenal paid Chelsea £8 million for Luiz’s services [BBC Sport], only for Frank Lampard to replace him with his Brazil teammate the following summer.

Whilst Luiz enjoyed lifiting the FA Cup with Arsenal in the summer, where he produced top-quality performances against Manchester City and Chelsea, he has since found game time tough to come by in North London.

Nonetheless, an angry Chelsea fan on 606 wasn’t pleased with the job Lampard is doing, and after he claimed that Luiz is better than Thiago, both Sutton and Savage issued this response:

“You think David Luiz is better than Thiago Silva,” questioned Sutton. “Come on! He [Luiz] was that good that Frank didn’t want him.

Savage then added: “David Luiz cannot even get into Arsenal’s team, who are below Chelsea in the table.”

Up until recently, Thiago was enjoying a strong start to life at Stamford Bridge, but performances have clearly hit everyone hard.

As for Luiz, he has lost his starting place at the Emirates even though Mikel Arteta was backing and raving about him towards the back end of the last campaign.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Arsenal fans are more than happy to part ways with Luiz this month, as the Gunners are top-heavy in the defensive department.
