Billy Koumetio is one of the most interesting teenagers at Liverpool right now.
Many fans of the Anfield club hadn’t heard much about the 17-year-old before this week, when Jurgen Klopp drafted him into first-team training.
But there’s a lot of supporters who are suitably excited by the Liverpool youngster’s potential now.
Training-ground images from Friday showed Koumetio – who stands at 6’5 – towering above Virgil van Dijk, the best centre-back in world football by virtue of the fact he placed second to Lionel Messi in the Ballon d’Or stakes last year.
Reds boss Klopp gave him a senior debut in the 3-0 win over Stuttgart yesterday, in which Koumetio replaced Sepp van den Berg after 68 minutes.
And despite only having 20-odd minutes to make an impression, he did so with a couple of towering headers and courageous blocks to preserve Liverpool’s clean sheet.
Here’s how fans on Twitter reacted to the Frenchman’s debut:
Unfortunately for Koumetio it’ll probably be a while before he turns out in the Premier League, but Klopp played a lot of young prospects in the cup competitions last season and a senior debut, in a competitive game, really can’t be ruled out next term.
