Tottenham Hotspur’s Kieran Trippier and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold are part of the England squad for the World Cup.
The former Liverpool and England international striker made the comments while picking his Three Lions’ team for their World Cup opener against Tunisia on Monday, and also explained why 27-year-old Tottenham star Trippier – who earns £40,000 per week as salary according to Spotrac.com – should be picked ahead of Liverpool ace Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back.
Collymore wrote in The Sunday People (print edition, page 59, June 17, 2018): “Lots of people are suggesting Trent Alexander-Arnold will play and I wouldn’t have anything against that.
“But I expect Southgate to go with Trippier and I’d give him the nod too because of his incision down the right side, the way he drives into the box and his crossing, which is exceptional, particularly on the move.”
Kieran Trippier or Trent Alexander-Arnold?
Trippier is a very good right-back who has established himself as a key figure in the Tottenham team.
Given the former Burnley star’s extensive experience, he would be the safer choice, but one cannot ignore how Alexander-Arnold ended the past season for Liverpool.
The 19-year-old right-back made himself the first choice in his position for the Reds and played an important role in Jurgen Klopp’s march to the final of the Champions League.
Given the way the teenager has matured and his obvious quality, perhaps England head coach Gareth Southgate should give him the nod ahead of Trippier against Tunisia.
