Can Tottenham Hotspur catch Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table?
Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has suggested on Boylesports.com that opposition teams could take it easy against Tottenham Hotspur between now and the end of the season.
Tottenham are back in the Premier League title race following two defeats for London rivals Chelsea this month.
The Blues are still at the top of the league table, but their current lead is now only four points; at one stage this season, they had a 10-point advantage.
Former Liverpool striker Collymore has suggested that some teams could be hoping that Tottenham win the Premier League title this season instead of Chelsea.
“Poch surely now must be thinking that after falling foul of the Leicester love fest last season, the average football fan is rooting for Spurs to do it,” Collymore wrote on Boylesports.com.
“Why would that matter? I’m convinced that opposition players bought into the general public mood of ‘We’d love the Foxes to win too’ and in some cases rolled over and had their bellies tickled by Leicester, so I’m wondering whether some teams may well be hoping Spurs and their cracking group of talented youngsters can do it after a season where for most of it we’ve been crowning Chelsea as Champions. Players are only human after all!”
Does Collymore have a point? Maybe, maybe not. What is clear is that Tottenham have a tougher run-in than Chelsea.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side will have to face Arsenal, West Ham United and Manchester United between now and the end of the season.
Winning against Hull City away from home at the KCOM Stadium on the final day of the season is not going to be easy, as the Tigers could still have a chance of avoiding relegation to the Championship then.
As for Chelsea, the only match that looks tough on paper is the one against Everton away from home Goodison Park later this month.
