Tottenham Hotspur made some mistakes with the money they received for Gareth Bale.

Stan Collymore has taken to Twitter to respond to a post from Gary Lineker which praised Mauricio Pochettino’s use of young players.

Shortly after England’s next generation reached the final of the U20 World Cup, Lineker wrote, “If more coaches, like Pochettino, are prepared to give them a chance we would soon be a major force.”

The Tottenham Hotspur boss has not been afraid to trust younger players, with the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and more recently Harry Winks answering the call.

However, Collymore believes there is a specific reason for the Tottenham boss’s decision earlier in his North London tenure.

“I’d argue it was only the post-Bale signings being mostly crap that put Poch into the position to play them,” he wrote. “Part hand forced, part trust.”

Whatever the reason, Tottenham and England are now benefiting from some very exciting players who look set to shine for club and country for the next decade.

There are plenty more waiting in the wings at Tottenham, along with many of the Premier League’s other top clubs, and they will not be complaining no matter how they get that first vital call-up.

There is no doubt that in the wake of Gareth Bale’s departure from White Hart Lane Tottenham splashed his then-record fee on some less than inspiring replacements.

But things are looking considerably brighter for Spurs and Pochettino these days and they will be looking to go one better next season and bring some silverware home.
