Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Runarsson has reportedly failed to leave the club on loan.

It was reported in midweek that the Iceland international was closing in on a move to Turkish side Altay.

The 26-year-old only joined Arsenal last September but endured a poor first season in North London, with the club’s hierarchy signing Mat Ryan as Bernd Leno’s deputy in January.

The writing was on the wall for Runarsson from that moment on and with talk of a deal for Aaron Ramsdale, he appears to have no future at the Emirates Stadium.

But the Gunners may yet have to tolerate him a little longer because Football London has reported that his loan to Turkey has collapsed.

The report adds that the source of the failure stemmed from both clubs failing to agree on a loan fee.

Not ideal

This is far from ideal for Arsenal.

Edu and Mikel Arteta will have wanted Runarsson off the books to concentrate on a move for the Sheffield United keeper, who is worth £30 million.

And with Arsenal signing academy stopper Arthur Okonkwo up to a new deal earlier this month, the youngster will probably be Arteta’s third-choice option for the 2021-22 campaign.

Now it remains to be seen if the Londoners can get another move for Runarsson but honestly, if he was joining Altay, then clearly the clubs aren’t booting down the Gunners’ door to sign him.
