Newcastle desperately need to make some signings this summer.
Former Sunderland manager has already stamped his authority at Chinese Super League side Hebei China Fortune by dropping Ivory Coast international and ex-Arsenal star Gervinho to the reserves – and Newcastle should move.
Still only 31 years of age, versatile attacker Gervinho joined the Chinese Super League side in January 2016 from Italian side AS Roma, whom he joined from Arsenal three years before.
French outlet Le Quotidien claimed on their website that due to the latest signing of Moroccan star Ayoub El Kaabi, Coleman was forced to drop one of his foreign stars in order to comply with rules set out by the Super League.
Hebei boast Argentinian duo Ezequiel Lavezzi and Javier Mascherano, as well as Brazilian star Hernanes. With the added signing of El Kaabi, Coleman decided to drop Gervinho with rules stating that only four foreigners can be in a side.
It is likely to see Gervinho go on the lookout for a new club, especially as his contract ends at the end of December. That should prompt Newcastle into action, by making a move to sign the goalscoring winger.
Gervinho made 63 appearances in all competitions during his two-year spell at Arsenal, scoring 11 goals, and was more than an adequate performer in the Premier League. With added experience, he would be a key signing for The Toon.
Indeed, Rafa Benitez desperately needs new additions this summer – with one of the key areas in need of strengthening on the flanks as Matt Ritchie continues to be linked with Championship side Stoke City.
Adding the flair, speed and eye for goal of a player such as Gervinho will give the Toon the attacking prowess needed to match their impressive tenth-placed finish of last season.
For a bargain fee due to his contract, Gervinho is the kind of calibre of player that will excite Newcastle fans. Benitez must consider an offer.
