Joe Cole has told ITV Sport’s coverage of the Netherlands’ win over Qatar on Tuesday that Cody Gakpo is showing the kind of potential that could see him reach Dennis Bergkamp’s level – amid interest from Arsenal and Liverpool.

Gakpo, 23, scored his third goal at the World Cup on Tuesday. The Netherlands cruised to a 2-0 win over Qatar without ever getting out of second gear. Gakpo opened the scoring, a neat right-footed finish. Frenkie de Jong made it two.

It sees Gakpo continue his wonderful form. Having been the subject of interest from Leeds, Manchester United and Southampton in the summer – he is being linked with plenty more. That is, after 30 goals and assists for PSV this term.

The Mirror claim Arsenal are interested in signing Gakpo. CM say Liverpool have made contact for a player that could cost as much as £70million. Cole says he is a real talent and has the potential to reach Arsenal icon Bergkamp’s level.

“Really exciting talent, one I earmarked at the start of the tournament that might do well. Can dribble, good movement off the ball. All the big clubs in the Premier League will be looking at this kid,” Cole said, before Netherlands kicked off.

“He joins an illustrious group. If he gets three goals in three World Cup games, the likes of Sneijder, Bergkamp – he is not moving in those kinds of circles yet, he will be on his way. A really exciting young player.”

Cole: Gakpo could reach Bergkamp level amid Arsenal interest

Gakpo is showing the kind of form and potential that would make him a wonderful signing for any club in the world. The top tier would love a player like Gakpo – the Bayern Munich’s, the Real Madrid’s the Manchester City’s of the world.

But Gakpo is smart – and not only on the pitch. He will know he needs to join a club that suits his style of play, where he can continue to grow and start game after game. Where he can still be the main man. So, where is that?

He almost joined Leeds in the summer – but a move fell through on deadline day. Arsenal would surely see him start over Gabriel Martinelli, despite the latter’s incredible form. He may struggle to start at Anfield when everyone is fit.
