Tottenham Hotspur were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Colchester United on Tuesday.

Dean Gerken of Colchester United looks on during the Carabao Cup Second Round match between Crystal Palace and Colchester United at Selhurst Park on August 27, 2019 in London, England.

Colchester United manager John McGreal has suggested that goalkeeper Dean Gerken should be playing in the Championship after he helped his side to a surprise EFL Cup win against Tottenham on Tuesday night.

In what was expected to be a comfortable evening for Spurs, it turned out to be a nightmare ending as they suffered penalty heartache against the League Two side.

Gerken, who has made over 200 appearances in the second-tier of English football [transfermarkt], saved Christian Eriksen’s spot-kick during the penalty shootout, with Lucas Moura hitting the crossbar.

Speaking to Sky Sports News (24/09/2019 at 11 pm), McGreal was pleased his team progressed as he believes he has a keeper on his hands who is potentially playing in a couple of divisions below his level.

“When it goes down to penalties, it becomes a lottery,” McGreal told Sky Sports. “We feel we have got the best goalkeeper if not in division two even in division one and should be around the Championship still.

“He has made that first important save to give us that belief, which got the crowd right behind us and then there was a couple of composed penalties as well. A brilliant night for the team and the club.”

It’s not the first time that Colchester have knocked out a Premier League team, and that on penalties because they did so during the previous round.

On that occasion, Crystal Palace were their victims, as they will be hoping to be drawn against yet another Premier League side tonight.

The likes of Manchester City, Everton, Leicester and Arsenal all progressed on Tuesday, whilst the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Aston Villa can join them if they win their respective games tonight.
