Colby Covington seems to already have a new opponent lined up in Real American Freestyle.

The former interim UFC welterweight champion improved his record to 2-0 under the RAF banner this past Saturday in Tampa, Florida.

Covington got the better of Dillon Danis in a matchup between two well-known personalities that shared the stage with Arman Tsarukyan’s rematch against Georgio Poullas at RAF7.

Right after taking down Danis, Covington turned his attention to former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman, calling for a wrestling match against the long-time fan favourite.

‘Chaos’ has revealed that the UFC shut down his plans to take on Tsarukyan, and he thinks the same policy would block any match against Chimaev as well. The UFC vs UFC policy likely rules out a potential clash with Khamzat Chimaev.

But with Weidman retired from MMA, nothing is stopping the 41-year-old from making his way back to competitive action through Real American Freestyle. And according to Covington, their matchup is already set for RAF9 on May 30 in Dallas, Texas.

Speaking on Submission Radio, Covington said: “(Weidman) is the backup plan if we’re not able to get Arman”.

“That’s already a done deal. Me and Chris Weidman is a done deal for RAF9, which is gonna be in Dallas, Texas. It’s gonna be on May 30.

“So I’m back in training camp tomorrow,” he continued. “I’m gonna get back to work and make some adjustments, be a little tighter with my game, and come back better.

“I’m gonna need to be on my A-game for Chris Weidman… He’s a former All-American. We’re gonna put the All-American to the test and find out who’s the real All-American, Colby Covington or Chris Weidman.”

Covington added to May 30 RAF9 card featuring Gable Steveson

If it does happen, then there’ll no doubt be plenty of interest. Neither man was a star when it came to pure fighting, but both have shown an ability to move numbers with the right opponent opposite them over time.

The May 30 card already has plenty of interest. One reason is the return of Gable Steveson, who steps away from MMA to take part in his first RAF match.

Steveson’s opponent hasn’t been revealed yet, but reports suggest the promotion is planning something big for his debut.
