Coco Gauff and Amanda Anisimova are two of the standout American players making waves at this year’s Australian Open.

Gauff has already booked her place in the quarterfinals, while Anisimova is looking to do the same in her upcoming match.

She just eliminated fellow American Peyton Stearns from the tournament and will now face Wang Xinyu next in Melbourne.

If she comes through that one, it will mean half of the remaining players in the draw are from the USA.

Following her fourth-round victory over Karolina Muchova, Gauff was asked if she was aware of the impressive statistic and what she thought might be behind it.

“Yeah, I’m definitely aware of it, because you see them every day, and we’re all rooting for each other. I don’t know. I think it’s cool,” she responded.

“I think I was mainly aware of it last year when we were at the WTA Finals. I think it was four out of the eight, if I’m not mistaken, were Americans.

“I don’t know what’s in the water, but I think we have a strong, like, tennis identity in United States. So I think that just causes the natural call to produce great players.

“Also, I think when you have friends and people you practice with being at a high level, if you’re not at that level yet, you know that you can reach there.

“Yeah, it’s really cool to see all of us doing well. Yeah, for sure, I think Jess [Pegula] and Maddie [Keys] play, so they’ll be for sure one, and hopefully Amanda can win and we can keep this up.”

All-American showdowns taking shape at the Australian Open

Gauff is rooting for Anisimova, but also knows that only one of Pegula or Keys can advance past their fourth-round matchup at Rod Laver Arena. It is the same court where Keys took down Sabalenka in last year’s final.

The winner of that match could end up facing Anisimova later in the tournament, assuming she gets through her upcoming clash with Wang.

In another part of the draw, there is a chance Gauff could run into Iva Jovic in the semifinals. But before any talk of that match-up, Jovic has to get past top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka.

The momentum is not new for American women. In 2025, Gauff won the French Open following Keys’ triumph in Melbourne, while Anisimova made deep runs to finals at both Wimbledon and the US Open.
