Coco Gauff’s Canadian Open campaign came to an end in the fourth round as she geared up for the US Open.

The world number two had not played since her early exit at Wimbledon, where Dayana Yastremska knocked her out in the opening round.

In Montreal, Gauff defeated Danielle Collins and Veronika Kudermetova to reach the last 16, but her run ended there, as she lost to Victoria Mboko in straight sets (1-6, 4-6).

While singles success eluded her, Gauff found better form in doubles. The 21-year-old has just hit a new milestone for this season.

Coco Gauff reaches first doubles final of 2025 in Montreal

Teaming up with fellow American McCartney Kessler, Gauff has reached the final of the Canadian Open doubles tournament. Their win over Barbora Krejcikova and Jelena Ostapenko was a standout moment, with the American pair edging out the experienced duo in a deciding set tiebreak.

They followed that up by defeating Olga Danilovic and Hsieh Su-Wei in another match tiebreak to book their place in the final.

In the final, Gauff and Kessler will face third seeds Taylor Townsend and Zhang Shuai, who are coming off a title run at the Washington Open.

Gauff had not reached a WTA doubles final since June 2024, having shifted much of her focus towards singles play in recent years.

But she’s no stranger to success on this side of the sport, holding a Grand Slam title from earlier in her career.

Earlier in the week, she even wondered aloud why her serve seems more effective in doubles than singles after posting strong numbers throughout the tournament.

This will be her sixth appearance in a WTA 1000 doubles final. She will be hoping to secure another title on Wednesday night alongside Kessler.

Coco Gauff’s record in doubles

Throughout her career, Gauff has appeared in 15 doubles finals alongside five different partners.

Nine titles from those appearances speak volumes about just how good she is when paired up on court. It’s not just about talent – it’s also consistency over time that stands out.

Coco Gauff’s record in doubles finals

The Canadian Open marks only her third appearance of 2025 so far – earlier outings came at Madrid and Rome without much fanfare or headline wins until now.

This latest final isn’t just another statistic. It comes after limited appearances earlier this year, with her only doubles outings coming in Madrid and Rome.

Now back under the bright lights in Montreal – and with a new partner by her side – she might just be on the verge of making more history.
