Conor Coady has shared that Tottenham defender Matt Doherty told him that he looked ‘possessed’ following his disallowed goal for Everton against Liverpool.

The Merseyside derby finished goalless at the start of the month and Coady described his disallowed goal – for offside – as ‘crazy’.

Given that Coady, who is on-loan at Goodison Park from Wolves this season, is a former Liverpool player then it would have been extra special had that goal counted.

But those tight margins are making the big difference as Coady found out against the Reds.

When Coady initially put the ball into the back of the net, he looked over to the linesman and saw that he had his flag down.

The England international shared that didn’t help matters because he thought the goal was going to stand, as he shared what his ex-Wolves team-mate Doherty told him during a phone call, as he told Premier League Productions.

“Good old VAR, eh?!” said Coady. “When the ball come in and I tapped it in. I knew it was tight.

“When I turned and looked at the linesman, his flag was down. If you think it’s offside, then you put your flag up. I know they don’t with the way they are now doing it.

“But when that flag was down I was like ‘Oh my God, I have done it’. I spoke to a good mate of mine, Matt Doherty at Tottenham. I played with him at Wolves.

“He rang me after the game and told me ‘Con, you look possessed’. So it was a crazy, crazy moment and then good old VAR came in to take it away from me.”

COADY MAKING A DIFFERENCE AT EVERTON

It was a big call from Coady to leave his comfort zone at Wolves in the summer because he was one of the main guys and the captain.

But Bruno Lage’s call to change the system, and as a result, place him on the bench meant that he had to move.

And it’s a call that has benefited Everton and Frank Lampard because they have very much needed a player of his standing.

They kept a clean sheet during that Merseyside derby and backed it up with another during their 1-0 win against West Ham last time out.
