Manchester United may need to choose between Michael Carrick and Julian Nagelsmann.

Michael Carrick and Julian Nagelsmann have emerged as early contenders for the Manchester United job.

Carrick took over as interim manager in November 2023 after Erik ten Hag was let go, and though he’s helped stabilise the team, there are now questions about whether he’s the right fit for the permanent role.

His record of nine wins, two draws, and two defeats has earned him backing from some of the squad, with players reportedly liking his style. There’s also a feeling that Carrick brings some of Sir Alex Ferguson’s traits back to Old Trafford. However, others at the club are pushing for a more proven name.

Nagelsmann is interested in the job and has made that clear to United. Despite being sacked by Bayern Munich in March 2023 following a disappointing Champions League exit against PSG, he still has a strong reputation across Europe.

Michael Carrick vs Julian Nagelsmann: Comparing the two head-to-head

One of the main arguments against Michael Carrick’s appointment is his lack of experience, but it’s worth noting that at 38, Nagelsmann is six years younger than him.

While Carrick has the advantage in age and playing background, Nagelsmann has managed more than twice as many games.

Carrick’s only full-time managerial role was with Middlesbrough from 2022 to 2025. In contrast, Nagelsmann had already built an impressive CV by then, having led Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig, and Bayern Munich before taking over the German national team in 2023.

This season, Carrick stepped in as interim head coach and made a strong start with six wins from his first eight matches—a 75% win rate.

But over the course of their careers so far, it’s Nagelsmann who holds the edge when it comes to overall win percentage (Carrick’s 48% to Nagelsmann’s 54%).

Carrick has brought back a traditional 4-4-2 shape at United this season. The side features classic wide players and Bruno Fernandes supporting a central striker.

Counter-attacking football and a flexible front four have become trademarks under Carrick so far. As for Nagelsmann’s approach, he has preferred a 4-2-3-1, but also used a 3-4-3 formation in the past, prioritising ball possession.
