David Unsworth left Everton earlier this year in search of his first-ever full-time managerial job, and now, he’s finally landed his first role since leaving the Toffees.
Indeed, Unsworth has just been appointed as the new manager of Oldham Athletic just a few months after leaving Goodison Park.
Unsworth has a real job on his hands at Oldham, and it’s fair to say that he’s jumped in at the deep end here.
The Boundary Park outfit have been in turmoil for quite some time now. They became the first-ever former Premier League club to drop down to Non-League last season, and they haven’t had the softest of landings in the National League, sitting 14th after nine games with just three wins to their name.

For those who don’t know, Oldham have been one of the most poorly-run clubs in England over the past five years or so. Players’ wages have barely been paid, the owners banned multiple influential supporters, managers were sacked on almost a tri-monthly basis and they’ve been relegated twice.
However, there’s optimism once again in Greater Manchester, Frank Rothwell, a local businessman and lifelong Latics fan, is now the new owner, and while John Sheridan’s sixth spell as manager didn’t quite work out, Unsworth has bags of experience to bring to Boundary Park.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Oldham have given an up-and-coming manager their first chance at being a Head Coach.
Paul Dickov got his break with Oldham back in 2010 and he did a decent job, David Dunn had a torrid time of it back in 2015, while Paul Scholes lasted just over a month in charge back in 2019.
Unsworth will be hoping he can more of a Dickov than a Scholes, and with years of experience at Everton behind him, we’re backing him to become a real success in the old Mill town of Oldham.
