David Unsworth taken on the role of academy director at Everton, as well as remaining in charge of the Under 23 side.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Unworth gave an insight into what the change involves at an elite club like Everton.

He was also quick to praise the calibre of those working with him, most notably manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Unsworth admitted there are still times when he cannot believe he’s working with one of the most legendary managers in the modern history of football.

“(Working) alongside one of the world’s finest managers… to learn from them, to spread the messages coming from Carlo, it’s really exciting.

“I’m surrounded by top coaches. When you’ve got a manager like Carlo Ancelotti, sometimes I still pinch myself when I’m talking to him.

“I’m stood alongside him… ‘that’s Carlo Ancelotti on the pitch next to you!’

“It’s brilliant that we were able to recruit someone of his class.”

It’s clear that Ancelotti has galvanised Everton and someone of his calibre is what the money which has come into club in recent years should be spent on.

Ancelotti has raised standards around the club and it’s clear to hear Unsworth – who does not work at first team level – speak that the Italian has rubbed off on everyone.

Can Everton keep their good form going? Not being in Europe certainly helps, allowing them to focus on just one game a week.

That should help avoid fatigue and allow Ancelotti to drill his players in midweek when many other rivals are traveling across Europe for games.
