Paul Aladejare has told The Scottish Sun that Wolverhampton Wanderers wanted to sign Rangers newboy Calvin Bassey when he was at Leicester City.

Rangers have signed Bassey on a four-year contract, with the Ibrox club paying Premier League outfit Leicester £230,000 in cross border compensation fee as his contract was running out this summer, according to The Express.

The Express has claimed that West Ham United and Bayer Leverkusen wanted the 20-year-old defender as well.

Bassey’s mentor Aladejare – who is the founder of CrownPro Elite Football Academy, is the Head of Academy Recruitment at Barnet and worked at Leicester – has raved about the youngster.

Aladejare has said that Wolves wanted the defender – who can operate at centre-back or at left-back – when he was at Leicester.

Aladejare told The Scottish Sun: “Calvin was a central midfielder as a kid, but we converted him to left-back. We worked really closely with him and at that time I was working for Leicester too.

“Wolves wanted to sign him, but after one game at Leicester they said, ‘We aren’t letting this kid go’.

“Bill Wall at the club was a big influence and they really helped him, as it was his first pro experience.”

Good signing for Rangers?

Bassey does not have any experience in the first team, but he will provide valuable cover at the back for Rangers.

The left-back will learn from Borna Barisic and will be able to deputise for him if and when needed.

With Rangers aiming to stop Celtic from winning the Scottish Premiership title next season, they need a strong squad.
