Rio Ferdinand has given his take on Twitter on the controversial penalty that Manchester United were given against Aston Villa.

United got the better of Villa 2-1 at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Friday evening.

Bruno Fernandes scored the winning goal in the 61st minute when he found the back of the net from the penalty spot.

The penalty was given after Douglas Luiz was adjudged to have committed a foul on Paul Pogba.

It was a controversial incident as it appeared to be a ‘soft’ spot kick, but former United defender Ferdinand believes that it was the right call from the officials.

Former Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor does not think that it was a penalty.

Match Stats

Over the course of the 90 minutes at Old Trafford on Friday evening, hosts United had 49% of the possession, took 19 shots of which nine were on target, and earned five corners, according to BBC Sport.

Visitors Villa had 51% of the possession, took 15 shots of which five were on target, and earned 10 corners, according to BBC Sport.

United are now level on 33 points with leaders Liverpool, while Villa are sixth with 26 points from 15 games.
