Odion Ighalo is a player on Newcastle United’s radar, with Sky Sports reporting earlier this month that the prospective new owners of the Magpies are looking at signing the striker on a permanent contract from Shanghai Greenland Shenhua.

Ighalo joined Manchester United on loan from Chinese Super League club Shanghai in the January transfer window.

Sky Sports reported earlier this month that the prospective new owners of Newcastle, Saudi Arabia’s PIF, are interested in signing the Nigerian striker, who will cost them £20 million+.

A new report on Sky Sports has claimed that Shanghai initially wanted the former Watford striker to return to the club when his loan spell at United ends at the end of this month.

The Chinese club were reportedly willing to agree to an extension of his loan deal only if United guaranteed that they would sign him for £20 million+ thereafter.

However, the Chinese outfit are now open to letting the striker stay at United until January, but only on the condition that he signs a new deal with them worth £400,000 per week.

No Newcastle United move?

It seems that Shanghai do not want to sell Ighalo at any cost this summer, which means that Newcastle will have to look elsewhere for a new striker.

If United do not want Ighalo to stay at Old Trafford until January, then it is unlikely that he will want to join Newcastle on a short-term deal, or that his parent club will let him move to the Magpies as they will need him for their own domestic league.
