Bayern Munich have been told they made a ‘big mistake’ signing Eric Dier with the England international swapping Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur for the Bundesliga champions.
It’s fair to say Thomas Tuchel, Bayern’s head coach, does not share Paul Parker’s rather savage assessment of Eric Dier’s shock switch to Bavaria.
The former Chelsea boss could hardly have been more complimentary of his January acquisition, Dier a ‘sensationally good character’ both on and off the pitch. Versatile too, capable of filling in at centre-half and in the problematic defensive midfield spot.
Still, Parker has a point.
Dier barely kicked a ball in anger during Ange Postecoglou’s first few months in the Tottenham Hotspur dugout. If Harry Kane’s big-money switch to Bayern was a reward for nearly a decade of prolific goalscoring, then Dier’s does have a feeling of ‘failing upwards’ about it.

“I have no idea how he managed to get to Bayern Munich,” Parker, a two-time Premier League champion at Manchester United in the 1990s, tells WettFreunde. “Impressive work from his agent.
“I don’t think he will play much. He could play because they have players on international duty (Kim Min-Jae featuring for South Korea at the Asian Cup). But, when they are back, he will just be a substitute.
“He is not a player who can improve Bayern Munich. Not at all. It was a big mistake to sign him, but I think they did it to protect themselves in January when some of their players are away with the national team.”
Bayern chasing down another Bundesliga title
Dier can make his loan move permanent for around £4 million in the summer.
The one-time Everton youngster, who has been replaced at Spurs by the £26 million Radu Dragusin, played the full 90 minutes in Bayern colours for the first-time during Saturday’s dramatic 3-2 win away at Bavarian rivals Augsburg.
Bayern, meanwhile, missed out on a third former Spurs ace last week. Newcastle United turned down their £12.8 million bid for Kieran Trippier.
