Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of signing Genoa defender Radu Dragusin – and FCSB owner Gigi Becali believes he has been proven right.

Tottenham simply had to bring in at least one new centre back during this transfer window.

Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were building a strong partnership earlier in the season but both have picked up injury problems.

Add in that Romero is prone to a suspension or two and Tottenham really needed to build depth at the back.

Playing Emerson Royal and Ben Davies as a centre back pairing just couldn’t continue and Tottenham are now on the verge of adding another natural centre back.

Tottenham made Genoa star Radu Dragusin their top centre back target heading into January and appear to be closing in on a deal.

HITC Football understands that Dragusin is heading to London for a medical ahead of securing his move to Tottenham.

Spurs will be paying around €30million (£26million) for Dragusin, handing Genoa a hefty profit having only signed him from Juventus last summer.

Bayern Munich tried to hijack the deal but Dragusin has decided to join Spurs over the Bundesliga champions.

The deal isn’t done until it’s done, but Spurs appear to be closing in on signing former Juventus defender Dragusin.

The move is making headlines in Romania and FCSB’s rather outspoken owner Gigi Becali has now had his say.

Becali has told Antena Sport in Romania that he called Dragusin as a €30million player a year ago, when nobody would have made such a statement.

“I told you a year ago, that Dragusin is a 30 million euro player, when no one said such a thing,” said Becali.

Becali seems to be patting himself on the back here but he may well have been ahead of the curve in terms of noticing Dragusin’s potential.

Tottenham clearly agree with his verdict having agreed to sign Dragusin and the hope is that he will go on to be worth much more down the line.

Dragusin may find himself as Tottenham’s third-choice centre back behind Romero and Van de Ven when everybody is available, but his potential is clear to see and he will be ideal to put pressure on the two Spurs centre backs moving forward.
